A radiologist from Ghana who has allegedly lived in Europe has been granted bail while awaiting trial in a fraud case, according to a report published on December 31 by the state-owned Ghana News Agency (GNA).
Police are awaiting further information about the gender of the radiologist, Christabel Suphar Sarkodie Tuffour, who has reportedly declined a physical examination. The GNA article states that Tuffour posed as a man in some cases while posing as a woman in others. A court in Ghana ordered Tuffour to be admitted into a hospital for gender testing.
Tuffour has been charged with five counts of defrauding people through false claims, all of which Tuffour has pleaded not guilty to. The report states that Tuffour is alleged to have taken 42,900 pounds ($53,075), 8,500 euros ($8,720), $5,000, and 230,000 Ghanaian cedis ($15,650) from 15 different people, luring them in with promises to help with obtaining visas to Germany and Canada.
Tuffour is thought to have worked with the German Immigration Service in Frankfurt while studying there, according to the GNA report. Tuffour also worked with an accomplice named Ebenezer, the article states. In one case, the two arranged a fake marriage for one of the victims, claiming the marriage would help secure a spousal visa.
